column and row headers not correctly displayed

I have compiled gnumeric-1.4.1 (and earlier versions on fedora 2; no
problems arose.  However, the column numbers and row letters don't
display properly: instead, I see a box with codes such as
         00
         41
inside.  Perhaps it's a font missing on my system?  How do I track
this down?
