Thanks, that solves some of the problem but not the problem in general. A field in paradox or even xbase is defined by its name, type and sometimes size. I'm looking for a solution to retain all this information when reading a paradox/xbase file in order to be able to save the idenitical file later (probably after modifying some field values). I have something in mind (as described in my first mail) but would like to hear some comments on whether this is a reasonable way to go.
