OK, we're getting somewhere now, I have a created the columns C and D as you
say, and I've typed in 
=linest(a1:a100;b1:d100,TRUE)
and pressed Ctrl+Shift+Enter and the indices {1,1}[0,0] appear. Lo and
behold the value is the coefficent of the x^3 term which I confirm by making
a chart of the data and adding a trendline and equation.

But when I add the same linest expression into the next cells in the row,
the same indices appear and the same value appears, when they should be
changing, no?. I am pressing Ctrl+Shift+Enter each time. What have I missed?
