Hi Bill,
the method you gave works for me !
Tons of thanks as I have tried to get it several times since
....years...! each time spending some hours browsing the web and trying
several settings combinations. Just ask the mailing list ...and there
you are !
So these issue might be considered as SOLVED at least for me.
Hi Pere,
Also many thanks for your reply !
The method you gave, also repeated by Bill, and very clearly explained
(thanks therefore), does not work for me. It works for numbers. But for
months, the selected cells are just copied/repeated. Even if the column
is formated to date (also format/custom/mmmm for exaple).
Best regards
Charlie

TO FILL A COLUMN WITH ONLY THE MONTH NAMES...
Remember this will fill the column with TEXT not date information!
The method described by Pere works if you type the month name as a
proper abbreviation or a full month name with the first letter
capitalized in your locale such as:
[Jan]
[Feb]
--or--
[January]
[February]
Then drag the corner as described.
TO FILL A COLUMN WITH THE MONTHS...
This will fill the column with DATE information. (more useful)
Select the first cell to use then:
Menu: Data > Fill > Series...
Series panel
Series in: Column
Type: Date
Start value: 1/1/2016 (note date)
Step value:
Stop value: 1/1/2018 (note date)
Options panel
Date unit: Month
Output panel
no change
Then OK. The column will be filled with 'General' formatted numbers.
Select the column header
Menu: Format > Cells > Format...
Custom: mmmm (for January)

Hi, in 1.12.32, catalan locale:
I type gener enter febrer enter
Results in two cells with the two first names of months, select the
two cells. Now put the pointer in the bottom right corner of the
selection, a thin cross should appear, click and drag down and you
are
done, the names of the 12 moths will appear in series, works too with
abreviations. No need for control nor alt keys.
I've noticed that this is locale dependent, say when I run gnumeric
in
catalan locale it doesn't work if I write the month names in English
and try the autofill. Also, you must type and select at least the
first two cells, otherwise gnumeric will just copy the entered text
around.

You can also change the monitor resolution used by gnumeric using the
Preferences dialog (Windows/Screen path). If this does not work,
please
file a bug report.
Hope this helps

I ran into an identical problem when I migrated to a system using a

was
fine (though oversized on the high DPI screen.)
If this is your issue, it's because gnumeric sets row heights in
pixels
that are not scaled with DPI, and the font engine is correctly
scaling
for high DPI, so you end up with more pixels than the row is high. I
couldn't find any settings to fix this (if there are, please,
someone
tell me.)
It's an ugly workaround, but if you want to leave your DPI settings
alone, you can scale the GDK DPI down to compensate using this on
the
command line. You may need to adjust the scale factor (96/monitor's
DPI):
GDK_DPI_SCALE=0.69 gnumeric [filename]
This will result in everything being scaled down to match the
unadjusted
row pixel spacing. You can then zoom to bring everything back to
normal
size, but all the UI elements will remain scaled down.

I have a related question.
In gnumeric settings, you can set the default zoom level and the dpi.
What is the difference between those two settings?
All the best,

Is there a SS wide option to make the row height work with the

Hi Andreas,
thanks for your quick reply :) !
I got a try entering 01/03/2018 in a first cell A1; and aftwds
defining
a range A1:A12;
then Menu/Data/Fill/Series
Thumbnail Series
Series in: Row
Type: date
Start value: 01/03/2018
Step value: her have tried values as 30, 31
Stop Value: 31/12/2018
Thumbnail Options
Date Unith: Month
Thumbnail Output
Output range: Sheet1!A1:A12
In that dialog box, as the ?OK? key is displayed as active, it lets
let
suppose values in the fields are recognized as valid.
This did not work though.
I have found a tutorial along the following link:
http://www.madonnadeipoveri.org/opt/gnome/share/gnome/help/gnumeric/C/autofill.html
but could not reproduce the steps according to figures 1-18 to 1-20
in
the paragraph ?Filling with Dates?
Thanks for any further advice
Best regards
Charlie

Hi,
Jan and Dec are not dates. Enter complete dates. If you want you can
format them in a way that shows only the month.
The step value is the number of days.
Note that since months have various numbers of days, you may not be
happy with your series in the long run.

how to fill a range of cells by a date-type serie?
Hi,
Here on gnumeric-1.10.17
The gnumeric manual tells to define date serie the same way as
number.
I tried reproduce that process using the Ctrl key on a range of
cells
whose first cell has been filled with Jan; but nope :(
I also tried using the Menu/Data/Fill/Series and there checking the
boxes
Thumbnail Series
Series in: Row (or Column)
Type: date
Start value: Jan
Step value: her have tried various values as 1, m, mm, etc but did
not
succeed ! :(
Stop value:Dec
Thumbnail Options
Date Unith: Month
Thumbnail Output
Output range: Sheet1!A1:A12
Many thanks for any solution especially for filling the ?Step
value:?
Best regards
Charlie
