Changing Alpha of a window...

Hello all,

 

I am writing a GTK app, and would like to know if it is possible to change the ALPHA channel of a window (making it more or less transparent).  Also, I would like to know if doing so would affect the child objects (making them as transparent as their parent)?  I would assume so, because of the objec-oriented nature of GTK, but I wanted to double check.
