Private Colormap?

Hi,

Somebody recently asked how one obtains a private colormap for an
application.  The application is based on GTK+1.2.  It occurs to me
that GTK+ must somehow accomplish this.  So how is this accomplished?
I looked thru what looked like the most likely places in the docs for
this and found nada.
