Progress bar state

What's the recommended method for putting a progress bar back to the 
state it was in prior gtk_timeout_add(). 

Essentially my goal is to run the progress bar while I'm preforming an
action and have it grayed out while doing anything else. It needs to
switch in and out of this state.
