GLib thread updates

The semantics in configure.in for finding the thread libs mucks with
$with_threads too much, IMHO.

I just fixed the brokenness, but want to do some more fixes.  I will
post a patch soon with my with-threads changes.  (I already committed
the configure.in bugfix)
