ok ... hmm in some cases the format number from X peers through gdk/gtk ....
this is bad as 32 doesn't mean 32 ... I guess gdk could fix it by stuffing
everything from format 32 into a list of guint32s .... but it needs to get and
give data to X in terms of gulongs or glongs

I'd say this is pre-1.2 material ... if it doesn't do something like this
already ... but as far as I can say it doesn't ...
