Scalable fonts question

Is there an easy way for me to say "print this string
and make it H pixels high and W pixels wide"?

I know that X has been able to do this for a while
(X11R4? X11R5?) and that X11R6 provides a way to do
scaling when you *load* the font.

What's the best way to do this in GTK?
