GTK 1.2 isn't slow, but it does flicker, and that appears slow. In GTK
2.0 the flicker is entirely eliminated thanks to Owen's work.
Moreover flicker is pretty much automatically eliminated for any
custom widgets you write. There's no need to explicitly use backing
pixmaps.
