I am not sure it could be said that usability was dependent on the
platform look and feal. There is a decent book on usability entitled
Human-Computer Interaction by Preece, J. et al ISBN 0-201-62769-8 that
might be worth taking a look at if your interested. 

HCI is my passion. The problem with creating the perfect interface is that
you are shooting for the average person. While only a small portion of the
population is anywhere near average. So your interface is to some degree
imperfect for a large portion of the population. Take for example the
seeing impared. Would it not be cool if you library set took care of
interpreting the interface and outputing to a speach card with little
intervition from the developer of the application.
