Yup, when I was reading havoc's book and got to the chapter about object
arguments I was very excited, but the widgets don't quite live up to the
potential of the object system.

It would be great for glade as well... I thought that glade just used the
object system after parsing the XML, but after perusing a glade project it
didn't seem to be using any of the argument names, so it must be doing
something different.
In XEmacs, it knows as little as possible about the widgets, and you import
the functions entirely in lisp. I was able to import most of GtkExtra
without recompiling XEmacs at all. It would be great if Guile and Glade
could do the same.

This would be up to the application that wants to use the new widgets. In
XEmacs I just exposed a dll-load function that loads the DLL stores the
reference in a hashtable, and the gtk-import-function walks the list of
DLLs that have been opened if it can't find it using the main executables
set of libraries.
So to load GNOME into a XEmacs that wasn't compiled into it:

And then loading gnome-widgets.el will expose the guts of (most of) the
GNOME widgets, all without any C level changes.
