arg, of course that needs to be:

  do
    {
      GDK_THREADS_LEAVE ();
      g_main_iteration (TRUE);
      GDK_THREADS_ENTER ();
    }
  while (GTK_WIDGET_VISIBLE (dialog));

which will, i guess, reintroduce fritz' problem, but then
i'm not sure i really understand it while reading over it again.
