The rational would be that it is insufficiently general to be worth having
in a library like GLib - more documentation / maintenance overhead than
would be saved by avoiding people reduplicating it.

But, since it seems to be used in various places, (gdm, GNOME run dialog,
galeon), sure, we can not deprecate it.
