The "press first letter"-thing-as-you-say is nice. But maybe having
C-s giving a more precise (maybe using regexps) search possibility
might be useful too, although the Emacs binding for regexps (that are
an expert thing anyway) is C-M-s.
Now, another useful thing that Emacs 21 and, for those who don't use
it yet, GNU less provide is the highlighting of matching elements
which aren't selected.
