For what it's worth, it's also the Motif standard, and I've seen some
Mac apps use it too (I don't believe it's actually mentioned in any Mac
guidelines, though-- but the Aqua guidelines still aren't finished so I
can't give you a definitive answer on that one.)
As an aside, on keyboards that have one, the Windows Application key
(the one that has a picture of a menu on it) is also used to pop up the
context menu, so it would be nice if GNOME supported that, too.
