oh yes. i need to revisit your conditions after i'm somewhat
more awake, but if your patch doesn't cause obvious redrawing/
reallocation mess, it's probably a good idea to get it in,
the overall rationales seem very sound to me.
at this point i'm just worried about corner cases, specifically:
- cleaning up flags etc. upon add/remove
- rerequesting/reallocating/redrawing a container and its child
upon add/remove/reparent (specifically if you have a life
widget tree already in place. initial gtk_window_show() tends
to conceal these issues)
