Being an offset into a simple char * holding all the
expansions concatenated together; I think this is
probably the right approach.
I've created a bug for this issue, along with a patch based on the
approach you described here:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=64982. It gets rid of another
3500 or so relocations, as well as moving more data into the .rodata
section.
