I think the consensus is that we would want Perl regular expressions if
any,
and the natural candidate for an implementation to wrap would be PCRE.
There has even been a prototype glib-PCRE wrapper sometime ago.
The main stumbling block is the incompleteness of the UTF-8 support in
PCRE, which needs to be fixed / worked around.
