I'm not Allin, but my file-manager is mc with multi-gnome-terminal,
and I find a little difficult using it in this way...
[no, I don't use GNOME, I use some gnome apps]

Please, stop thinking we all use nautilus-rox-xfm-whateveryouuse, and
that we all use PIV or Athlon

Another shot: in other os port, what the user must do if a file
manager is implemented in this way?
