Yes, it would be nice if there was a tool that could be used. Libtool
provides it's own portability problems in that library versions are OS
dependent, plus it keeps changing making it necessary to track libtool
changes in the configure scripts.
Using plain autoconf means that my portability problems are per-machine,
rather than per-machine and per-autoconf/libtool version. So far, it's
been a win for me.
