GTK_MODULE_PATH

I saw reference to GTK_MODULE_PATH in September 2001:

Looks like it didn't make it in? How do I specify a path outside of
the GTK installation directory for GTK to search for additional
modules?

Looking at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=68474, it seems
the above is impossible.
