GtkHandleBox detaching and attaching

After looking at the documentation for Gtk+2.x and above, and looking for
information related on other sites, I have been unable to find a way of
detaching or attaching the child of a gtkhandlebox programmatically.  There
are functions to set the widget up, but none to actual attach or detach
without the user's intervention.

Can a function (or two) to attach and detach the child to/from the parent be
added?  Or if there is a way already (I have not yet seen), can someone
enlighten me?
