That's only part of the problem, and a relatively easy one to
tackle...
I'm with Tor on this. I currently package GTK along with the win32
version of my app, and install it into the application's directory.
This makes for easy installation, for both me and the users (no need
to worry about incompatible versions of DLLs). Although the package
is quite large (c. 6.5MB) it's no bigger than most "serious" win32
applications.
Yes, it's inelegant to have a situation where a win32 user may end up
with multiple, per-application installations of GTK, but it's hard to
imagine a truly reliable, hassle-free alternative.
In fact, I sometimes wish I could do the Windows-style thing for
a Linux binary distribution of my app, since the rpms that I roll
regularly fall foul of subtle or not-so-subtle incompatibilities.
