Hi,
The current gtk+ IPA Input Method is lacking at lot of commonly used IPA
(International Phonetics Association) characters.
Instead of arbitrarly adding them to the current im-ipa or creating my
own sequences, I suggest we use the X-SAMPA standard.
X-SAMPA is a way to type IPA with any ASCII input.
It has a list of sequences that almost completely covers IPA, lacking
only non-standard IPA and extended-IPA characters.
X-SAMPA is used by the industry and the academia for phonetic
transcription so people who would potentially use the IPA IM are
familiar with it or at least might have heard of it.
I opened a bug (http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=164926) and
suggested a patch. If applied we might want to change the label of the
IM from "IPA" to something like "IPA X-SAMPA" to make it obvious what
the sequences are.
