You don't. :-)

I'm working on a way to integrate nicely the menu widget with the
UIManager. Right now, I have a GtkRecentAction that can create a
sub-menu containing the list of recent files and implements the
RecentChooser interface; it also can create a MenuToolButton, so that
you'll have an 'Open' button on the toolbar similar to the one Gedit is
using.

I'm still trying to get a menu-inlined list without changing the
UIManager itself and adding a placeholder item in the UI definition
markup.
