pkg-config and PKG_CONFIG_PATH are needed only at compile time.
Another approach would be to use jhbuild, which will put *everything*
you need, pkg-config, correct autotools, etc, into a separately
prefixed sandbox. jhbuild also includes a way to set up the runtime
environment ("jhbuild shell", then run your programs).

However, like all drugs, PANEXA can produce some notable side
effects, all of which are probably really, really terrific and
nothing that anyone should be concerned about, let alone notify any
medical regulatory commission about.
