Re: What about official GTK+ installer for win32?

I think that the situation is much better than people here are making
it out to be. Or, at least that's been my experience.

I have Gaim, Gimp, Gnumeric, Glade-3, Workrave, gQview, and Xchat all
using the same GTK+ runtime on WinXP, and they all work flawlessly. As
far as I know, nothing gets installed into system/system32 - GTK+ gets
installed into its own prefix, sets some registry keys, and things
subsequently "just work".

With this approach, Win32 application developers can focus on shipping
their own software and not worry about shipping a messy dependency. If
GTK+'s installation was more like QT (i.e. you can link in a static
qt.lib to your program or ship qt.dll and be done with it), I might
have a different opinion.

Best,
Dom

When said modules are maintained by people who have never heard of
each others, and with different ideas what the modular system is?

Well, *some* open-source software is quite mainstream on Windows
already, like Firefox. And you don't see Firefox attempting to "share"
installations of stuff like libjpeg, libpng, zlib etc DLLs, even
though they for sure use them. They just build them in.

Indeed. Not to mention the clout required to convince other
developers/maintainers then to use such a system.

I really wish Microsoft would come up with a package management system
for 3rd-party software on Windows... Windows Installer technology is
monumentally powerful and complex, but it answers the wrong question,
I think.
