The on-screen keyboard is really something that should be provided by
the OS or desktop you are operating in.
For GNOME, gnome-shell provides an osk since 3.2:
http://live.gnome.org/ThreePointOne/Features/OnScreenKeyboard
It is still somewhat rudimentary and could use some love and support,
but it exists and works, if you enable it.
