default font for a widget?

hi,

what's the way to set a default font for a widget?

 style = gtk_widget_get_style (dir_list);
 style->font = gdk_font_load ("fixed");
    if (style->font)
		gtk_widget_set_style (dir_list, style);

sets the 'fixed' font for *all* widgets :(
