It looks the command line is missing the flags to link in
the X libraries. (So, it's an autoconf problem.)
What OS/version/etc. are you running?
What is in the file gtk+970916/gtk+.xconfig?
(Not that it is used here, but it will show what configure decided
about your X configuration.)
