GTK compiler linking errors

Hi,
     I've just installed GTK 1.0.6.  After following the configs shown in the
FAQs when attempting to compile the inbuilt testgtk example  I still get the
compiler error: 

gcc: -L/usr/local/gtk/lib :no such file or directory

I believe I have set the paths correctly in /etc/ld/so.conf and tried exporting
the LD_LIBRARY_PATH as suggested in another FAQ.

Any suggestions appreciated.
