There's no reason why it couldn't (be backported into GTK+), right?  You 
just have to talk to the 
GTK+ maintainers.  Federico is just trying to fill in the blanks that 
exist in GTK+ as best he can by making Gnome extensions.  Hopefully, they 
will eventually end up where they belong -- in the widget set.  
(Other things, like ItemFactories and things that specifically are 
"tools" for building apps -- I can see the logic of keeping those in 
Gnome extensions.  But "widgety" type things should eventually find their 
way back to the _widget set_, no?)
