Yup figured that out, too (hey maybe I do know something about shell
script programming... nah :).  I did the replacement, ran configure, and
it successfully did the test.  However, the test itself returned a
failure, even though the output given by gtk-config was finally corrent
and the configure script finally worked.  It simply just told me that gtk
was not to be found (I hate it when the computer thinks it knows better
than I do ;).

This is not the first time I've had this problem on Solaris, or on my
Linux box for that matter.  As a tribute to my anal retentiveness I never
install the gimp or GTK in the default directory.  On my Linux box I
install GTK and the GIMP into /usr/local/gnome, and at school where I
don't have root access I install it in a certain subdirectory.  I do the
same thing for QT and KDE and KDE can find Qt with no problem if I decide
to put it in a non-standard directory.  However, the GIMP cannot do the
same for GTK, even if I run GIMP's configure with the
"--with-gtk=/usr/local/gnome" flag.  Configure simply exits saying it
cannot find GTK.

So my question is has anybody ever actually successfully installed GTK and
the GIMP in a non-standard directory (not /usr/local)?  If so, how?
