The spin button currently has some problems dealing with very large / small
floats, so I don't think FLT_MIN / FLT_MAX is a good idea. ;)
But your special problem should be solved by :
 
   gtk_spin_button_set_update_policy (spin_button, GTK_UPDATE_ALWAYS);
