Hi,

What it comes down to is that GtkText is not a good basis for any kind
of full-featured text editor, because when you start wanting things
like this it won't work. This is probably a good thing since you
wouldn't want GTK to have an Emacs-sized footprint.

You basically want to look into drawing your own text display...
