Chaning foreground and background colors

Grettings,

I've recently been working on a program in which I'd like to have an
area of text have a black background, say, white text, and different
sized/colored text in the area.

>From what I gather this will require the use of Gdk functions. The only
problem I'm having is the Gdk documentation I have seen is extremely
incomplete. (The Gdk Reference Guide @ www.gtk.org/docs/gdk_toc.html) Is
there another set of documentation that has examples/references on
chaning the appearance of widgets by settings their colors/fonts.
