gtk and gettext

I have the GNU gettext-0.10 installed, but when I configure gtk+
I get:
found xgettext program is not GNU xgettext; ignore it
checking for gettext... (cached) no
checking for gettext in -lintl... (cached) no

This doesn't bother me per se (because I don't understand really what this
means) but when I try to compile gimp-1.1.4 it fails with a million of
gettext errors. If this problem is non-standard, I'd be happy to supply
mor info...
