Gtk--: generating/installing libgtkmm.a

Hi,

I just noticed that after my last Gtk-- install, libgtkmm.a wasn't
generated/installed, meaning that I can't link statically. My
/usr/local/lib currently holds:
     libgtkmm-1.0.so.5.0.0
     libgtkmm-1.0.so.5 -> libgtkmm-1.0.so.5.0.0
     libgktmm.so -> libgtkmm-1.0.so.5.0.0
     libgtkmm.la

I'm assuming there's an easy way to tell Gtk-- that I want
libgtkmm.a generated and installed; I just don't know
how. Could anybody point me in the right direction here?
