How do i get configure_events

I'm doing a custom widget that needs to know when its size is changed. The
configure_event signal works when i connect it to the GtkWindow that my
widget is in, but it never gets called if i connect it to my Widget.

How do i do this? Is there some other signal that i should use? (I had
some problems using size_allocate.)
