Serious crack-rock.
I'm not sure if the biggest crack-rock was the C people not defining
the signedness of char, or the C++ people making this an error, but
there was some definite crack-rock somewhere along the line. :-)
Anyway, sorry about the breakage, should not have been changed in GTK.
