It would be nice if GTK+ supported dynamic label binding much like X
does with its resource files. This would allow for multilingual support
without needing to rework any code.

I think you're proposing a change that's much more sweeping than you
realize. Right now GTK+ doesn't do internationalization, as it
assumes the developer will adhere to the GNU internationalization
standards. So by proposing a new mechanism, you're proposing either
that GTK+ cease to be consistent with the rest of GNU, or that all of
GNU change its approach. While your proposal may or may not be
superior to the existing approach, you should at least be aware of it
and compare you ideas to it -- the best description I've seen of it is
in Pennington's book, see

documention on gettext.
