signal testing

I'm using gtk_signal_emit_stop_by_name() to stop
a signal emission, but it's not always the case that
the signal will have been called when I call this
function. Does anybody know of a way I could verify
the emission before I try to stop it? Otherwise, I get
gtk warnings.
