problems with toolbar icons

Ever since i built gtk from source, the default icons (ie the ones on the galeon toolbar, and on the buttons on the logout panel in gnome) have been replaced by a fuzzy square. I know it's because gtk cant find the icons, or gtkrc file(s), but not quite sure on the details, any help would be much appreciated.
