Why is GtkTreeView a container?

Do GtkTreeView widgets ever respond with a non-empty set of children()?  If
not, why is GtkTreeView a subclass of GtkContainer?  In the simple examples
I've seen or written they always have an empty list of children, even though
there is clear stuff there (lists, buttons at the top of the columns, etc).
