you don't even need to install into separate prefixes. Both versions
(1.2 and 1.3) live happily side-by-side. You choose which version to
use during a compile by using the appropriate CFLAGS and LDFLAGS
which you get from gtk-config (1.2) or pkg-config gtk+-2.0 (1.3).
