gdk_get_default_root_window()

Note, that the real root window may be hidden under the desktop 
manager's window, so dont expect to see your drawings if you're using 
nautilus or smth like it...
If you want to play with a root window try a simple window manager 
('twm', for example), also consider 'xwininfo' tool.
