Problems compiling gtk+ 2.2.4 on RedHat Linux 8.0

I'm having some difficulty compiling gtk+ under RedHat 8.0, and wanted
to see if anyone on the list might have some ideas as to what is causing
the problem:

Using gcc 3.2 (gnupro release 03-r1), and invoking configure as follows:

The build seems to proceed in a fairly normal manner until attempting to
build the modules/input directory (target gtk.immodules), at which point
I receive the following error (I receive this error for every .la file
within modules/input, but for brevity have only included the errors for
the first of the .la files):

As a result of this, modules/input/gtk.immodules is empty, except for
the autogeneration comments, and the build fails.

This suggests to me that the library does in fact support the GTK+ IM
API, but that the problem has to do with access of the library by
libtool and/or gtk-query-immodules-2.0

Does anyone have any suggestions about how to resolve this build issue? 
Given that the failing components seem to be input methods for locales
that I don't need to support anyways, I'd be happy if there is some
hidden configure option to disable these modules.
