current GTK+ configure script finishes with no success if cairo is not compiled with PDF/PS backend.
Then you might be saying that you modified something?
What did you do to remove the "pdf/ps enabled cairo" dependency of GTK+? Can you share the tip with the group? ;)

PDF backend is not mandatory - I've been building without it for years.
